Property Buyers Association being launched today

A new property industry trade association - The Property Buyers Association (PROBAS) - is being formally launched today (Tuesday 5 February 2008), together with a comprehensive Code of Practice for its members.

The Association’s creation follows discussions between leading players in the Sale-and-Rentback sector, on the one hand, and other interested stakeholders including the Treasury and the Citizens Advice Bureau.

The Association’s founders include UK Property Buyers, North East Property Buyers and A Quick Sale who, between them, buy thousands of properties annually. With another 150 expressions of interest having been received from potential Association members, even before today’s official launch, PROBAS hopes that it will soon represent a sizeable proportion of the Sale-and-Rentback sector.

Compliance with the Code will be a strict requirement for all members of PROBAS which, following today’s launch, will be conducting a further recruitment drive.

The PROBAS spokesman, Glyn Thomas, a Sale-and-Rentback consultant, said: “I would like to thank our founding members, who have put so much hard work into establishing the Property Buyers’ Association. It’s great that the sector now has its own, dedicated trade association with a detailed Code of Practice - developed after extensive discussions between our founders and consumer groups. I’m also delighted that PROBAS has already had so many expressions of interest from potential members. I’m confident that the Association will soon prove its worth, and go from strength to strength over the years ahead.”

UK Property Buyers’ Amanda McHugh added: “I’ve long believed that the Sale-and-Rentback sector should move into line with other parts of the property industry - so I’m delighted with today’s launch. It’s great that we now have a trade association, PROBAS, and a comprehensive Code of Practice. I’m sure they’ll play key roles in improving both professional standards and public perceptions of our sector. Our clients need to know that Sale-and-Rentback sector has become infinitely more professional, with PROBAS members always operating openly and honouring all their commitments.”

Jane Douglass of North-East Property Buyers, another founding member, said: “I’m really pleased that PROBAS is getting off to such a great start, with a strong Code and so many expressions of interest from potential members. Indeed, I’m sure we’ll get many more queries as a result of today’s launch. It bodes well for everyone in the industry - buyers and sellers alike.”

The principle of transparency underpins both the Association and its Code of Practice, with all PROBAS members being required to provide consumers with ‘Key Facts Information’, written in plain English, in line with the Financial Services Authority’s policy on ‘Treating Customers Fairly’.

PROBAS will provide its members with a full range of benefits including information-sharing, networking events and an ‘early warning service’ about any possible changes, under consideration in Westminster or Whitehall, which might affect their businesses in the future.

This political intelligence service is being supplied by a leading public affairs consultancy - Quintus Public Affairs - which has also provided PROBAS with its secretariat service, and helped to prepare its Code of Practice, in the approach to today’s launch.
